UPCOMING EVENTS

Preconstruction activities are currently underway and will continue through October of 2026. The phasing of the schools is staggered to accommodate resource constraints during construction phases. Construction is scheduled to begin during Q1 2026 and continue through 2029, encompassing all five schools and the administrative building.

Construction will begin in phases, anticipating the following order: E. Benjamin Oliver Elementary, Lockhart Elementary, St. Thomas Administrative Building, Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, Yvonne E. Milliner Bowsky Elementary, and Jane E. Tuitt Elementary. Although construction will start first at E. Benjamin Oliver, the administrative building is expected to be the first to be completed. This website will be updated as we enter the construction phase of each building with the scheduled completion dates.

We are actively collaborating with the Owner to minimize the use of portable trailers and minimize the relocation of students between campuses during the interim period as much as technically feasible. Once the phasing plan and temporary swing space arrangements are finalized and approved by the Owner, we will share additional details on this website.

We are currently working closely with VIDE to explore various scenarios aimed at minimizing disruption to students. Before construction begins on any campus, detailed information will be provided and posted on this website.

Regarding impacts to traffic and road closures, there may be adjustments in drop off areas at a particular school that would be communicated to all parents and students well in advance of any change being implemented. The amount of off-site work that would require road closures is minimal and should not be a significant interruption for any parties.

In any instance where construction occurs on an active school campus, there will be strict separation between the construction zones and all students, teachers, and staff. Comprehensive safety plans will be reviewed and approved by school officials to ensure that all concerns are fully addressed.

Yes, all schools will be built to meet or exceed current building codes, including those specific to hurricane and natural disaster resilience. The designs incorporate modern safety standards to ensure the buildings can withstand severe weather events. The proposed design plans include two school gyms specifically designed to serve as hurricane shelters during severe weather events.

The project is primarily funded through substantial federal grants provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These funds are part of the ongoing recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.
